According to Britannica, engineering is "the application of science to the optimum conversion of the resources of nature to the uses of humankind. ". Chat GBT's definition of engineering is " Engineering is a field of study and practice that involves the application of science, mathematics, and creativity to design, develop, and improve structures, systems, machines, devices, and processes that solve practical problems and meet human needs." Although these explanations are correct, from the education point of view, the factors that need to be considered in the implementation of these practices should be included.
Although engineering has not been conceptualized by sociology and philosophy in depth enough, it is a known fact that there are various ideologies that direct the way of production. For instance, in the Fordist view, the benefit of engineering can only be considered by reducing costs. At ISTUN, on the other hand, we are trying to implement an education system that aims to train engineers who are morally responsible, human-oriented, honest, prioritize social benefits in production, and discreet individuals in a way that will shape not only the moment they live but also the future. As a result, it is expected that the candidates, after becoming an engineer, will be able to display an attitude that will enable them to reach a synthesis by examining the problems from a wider perspective, evaluating, and discussing social problems taking into account the rights of the living things, ontological, epistemological and engineering ethics, using the critical mind path and the questioning method. For the formation of this attitude, it is inevitable for students to gain an interdisciplinary perspective and to expand it with social sciences such as art, philosophy, sociology, history, politics, law, international relations and politics, economy, and communication, in addition to establishing the foundations of mathematics and science throughout their education life. It is aimed to give our students the awareness of this necessity at all levels of education.
Graduates of the department with the title of "Mechanical Engineer" are in demand in the industry since there is a shortage of qualified candidates, especially in the areas of the vehicle (automotive, aircraft, ship, railway systems), defence, chemistry, material, installation, white goods, energy systems, health technologies, maintenance, repair, and automation. Candidates who take a professional perspective blended with the integration of current science and technology knowledge and interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary education system at the undergraduate level of our university are expected to stand out more in applications. In addition, ISTUN aims to focus more on the field of Biomedical and health technologies when considered its strong bond with Neutec, which is one of Turkey's leading pharmaceutical groups, and national and international network of the group in addition to the presence of the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
We think that not only ISTUN students, but all students who are our hope and our future, are ambassadors of goodness and beauty and will paint a better picture of our future. We believe that our students endeavour to share knowledge and solidarity in all areas and try to demonstrate an education level based on love and tolerance in a way that will set an example for the whole world.
