Department Chair’s Message

The mission of Industrial Engineering is designing and managing systems in different fields. Engineering is about trying to improve one, more, or all of the performance indicators expected of the system. Engineering is redesigning the existing system to better meet the need. Engineering is sometimes being an inventor and designing new systems that no one has seen before, but which are very useful once they are used. Engineering uses basic sciences while doing these. Engineering expresses itself in the language of mathematics. Engineers express problems mathematically, find a solution, and put it into practice. With this definition, we can think of the engineering branches that do these activities for gear systems in machines, PLC systems, algorithms in software, plumbing systems, systems used for construction, etc..

Industrial Engineering examines the systems of companies and organizations that produce goods or services. Performance criteria such as profitability, high quality, low cost, and more importantly sustainability expected from the system, are improved. To provide these, the existing system is improved, or a new system is designed. The problems are modelled mathematically, and the best (optimum) solution is sought for these mathematical problems. It uses methods such as advanced mathematics, algorithms, and artificial intelligence to find the solution. The quality characteristics of the output of the system and the factors affecting them are determined. Systems are designed to ensure the standardization and continuous improvement of the quality of the output. The implementation process of the designed new system is managed. A better understanding of the current situation is provided by making statistical analyses with the data produced by the enterprise and other environmental data. With these analyses, it is ensured that accurate predictions can be made for the future. With scientific decision-making methods, solutions are developed to ensure correct decisions. Plans are made to ensure that the production or a project is completed at the right time, in the right amount, and with the optimum use of resources. These examples can be multiplied. In short, Industrial Engineering provides an engineering perspective to businesses and organizations.

In our department, we first teach our students basic science courses and basic engineering courses, giving them the ability to think analytically. Then, we transform the minds of our students by teaching Industrial Engineering courses. After graduating from our department, students will begin to look at the problems around them from a particular engineering perspective. They will be able to look holistically by illustrating the systems around them with flowcharts. They will be able to understand a system in depth by thinking algorithmically and able to develop suggestions for improvement. With the Industrial Engineering subjects they have learned, they will have an effective and inclusive mindset that is different from most of the others in an organization.

Istanbul Health and Technology University, Department of Industrial Engineering believes in the importance of enriching education with experiences. In recent years, all information has become accessible and learnable from anywhere. Just transferring the knowledge to our students will not enable us to train good Industrial Engineers. Therefore, our students should experience what they can do with the knowledge they have learned before they are graduated.

Our team consists of faculty members who have experienced within most of the jobs an Industrial Engineer can work in academia or business. Our foundation has more than 30 years of industry and sector experience. With this experience, ideals that will both take our country and our industry forward and help train engineers who can make an impact all over the world have been revealed. Our Industrial Engineering team came together with the charm of these ideals.

Our students learn not only through academical means but also through lived experiences. We assign our students to projects where they will apply the knowledge they have learned to real-life problems. Thus, we ensure each of our graduates ready for business life. With these experiences, besides contributing to the development of their own careers, they will also ensure the development of the organizations they will be involved in. Most importantly, with these experiences, they will have a vision that will enable them to become good managers, entrepreneurs, or academicians (scientists).

I invite all student candidates who have high goals and expectations for their careers, who want to create added value for their country, and want to make the world a better place, to be a part of our department, our team, and our family.
